You never know when an emergency situation is going to arise that requires some sort of first aid intervention, but it is highly likely that you will find yourself confronted by one at least once in your life. The way in which you respond could end up making all the difference to the person who is in trouble. Of course, you are likely to go into a state of mind which is very different from normal when you are encounter any sort of emergency situation, but if you can, it is worth taking a step back to remember a few different pieces of advice.

Assess the Situation

First of all, you need to take a step back to assess the situation. Are you the only person on hand who is responding to the emergency or are there other people who are helping to deal with it? Perhaps you are in a workplace and there are people who are specifically trained in first aid. Of course, you have to know whether you have time to get them or you are going to have to deal with the situation on your own. Bystanders will often ignore an emergency situation completely as they believe that someone else is taking responsibility for it. If you can help out in any way, it could be that you are a lifesaver.

Get Help

If nobody has yet called the emergency services, it is your job to do so or instruct someone else to or search for urgent care. People often tend to panic when they are confronted by this kind of situation, and if nobody else seems to be taking action, it is your job to do so. If the emergency is an injury to a person, somebody should stay with them to ensure that they are not left alone at any point. Assess the Environment

If you have the necessary first aid skills already, this may be the time to put them into practice. However, you need to assess the environment that you are in. If there are any other direct sources of danger, you don’t want to end up putting yourself at risk.
